V. M. Chkhikvadze 2000 | Nuchal is extremely wide and short (its width exceeds medial length four times (character 1(4), 17, tab. 1). Anterior margin of nuchal is not acute in cross section, having different shape from Amyda exquisita (12, fig. 682). Suprascapular fontanels are absent in adults (probably always). Preneural absents. There are 8 pairs of costals (the most wedge-shaped are II, V and VI costals). VIII pair of costals is noticeably wider than in turtles of Rafetus group. The caudal margin of the carapace is formed by moderately reduced VII and VIII costals. The VIII costals are the smallest; length of free margin of VII costal exceeds its medial length (along medial suture). There are 7 neurals. Tetragonal is usually the Vth neural; the rest are hexagonal, of them anterior ones have short sides posteriorly and posterior (except the last) ones have short sides anteriorly.
The plastron of Zangerlichelys has some similarity with plastron of recent Aspideretes (sensu stricto), but the antero-medial processes of hyo- and hypoplastra are noticeably shorter. Thus, proportions of hyo-and hypoplastra are different, they are not so wide. Besides this in Zangerlichelys each hyoplastron has only one axillary “horn”. Thus this turtles have only inguinal pair of musk ducts. |
