Stutchburia variabilis was named by Dickins (1957). Its type specimen is CPC 2205, a valve (left valve), and it is a mold. Its type locality is Callytharra Springs (1.8 mile WSW), Byro Homestead, which is in a Sakmarian coastal siliciclastic in Australia.
