Taxonomy
Asinus africanus was named by Heuglin and Fitzinger (1866) [lectotype designated by Groves and Smeenk 2007]. It is extant. Its type specimen is MNS 32026.
It was recombined as Equus asinus africanus by Lydekker (1904); it was recombined as Equus africanus by Matschie (1894), Beja-Pereira et al. (2004) and Groves and Smeenk (2007).
