Cythereis was named by Jones (1849) [Sepkoski's age data: K Haut T Than Sepkoski's reference number: 74,138,1066]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Cythere (Cythereis) by Jones (1850).

It was assigned to Cythere by Jones (1850); to Cytheridae by Ulrich and Bassler (1904) and Alexander (1934); to Podocopida by Sepkoski (2002); to Trachyleberidinae by Bertels (1969), Bertels (1975) and Ceolin et al. (2015); and to Trachyleberididae by Ceolin et al. (2024).
