Vulpini was named by Hemprich and Ehrenberg (1832). It is extant.
It was assigned to Otocyoninae by Clark (2005); and to Caninae by de Bonis et al. (2007), Wang et al. (2008), Tedford and Wang (2008), Tedford et al. (2009), Hartstone-Rose et al. (2013), Bartolini Lucenti (2021) and Ruiz-Ramoni et al. (2022).
