Cytheridea was named by Bosquet (1852) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 74]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Cytherideinae.
It was assigned to Cytheridae by Ulrich and Bassler (1904), Alexander (1934) and Stephenson (1936); to Cytherideinae by Benson et al. (1961) and Hazel (1983); to Podocopida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cyprideidini by Puckett (2008).
