Taxonomy
Formica eoptera was named by Cockerell (1923). It is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Mossy Creek SW of Wellborn, which is in an Eocene delta plain claystone in the Fayette sandstone Formation of Texas.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Carpenter (1930).
