Elater neptuni was named by Giebel (1856). It is an impression. Its type locality is Lower Lias (Brodie coll), which is in a Rhaetian/Hettangian marine shale/limestone in the United Kingdom.

It was recombined as Plastelater neptuni by Handlirsch (1906).
