Goniatites kansasensis was named by Miller and Gurley (1896).

It was recombined as Gastrioceras kansasense by Smith (1903); it was recombined as Glaphyrites kansasensis by Plummer and Scott (1937) and Ruzhentsev and Bogoslovskaya (1971).
