Cistelites byrrhoides was named by Geinitz (1894). It is an impression. Its type locality is Dobbertin, Mecklenburg (Greifswald collection), which is in a Toarcian offshore claystone in Germany.

It was recombined as Polypamon byrrhoides by Handlirsch (1906).
