Ostreoida was named by Fërussac (1822). It is extant.

It was considered an invalid subgroup of Pteriomorphia by Giribet and Wheeler (2002); it was corrected as Ostreida by Carter et al. (2011).

It was assigned to Pteriomorphia by Coan et al. (2000), Todd (2001) and Scholz et al. (2008); to Ostreiformii by Carter et al. (2011); and to Eupteriomorphia by Waller (2011).
