Taxonomy
Pycnodonteini was named by Stenzel (1959). It is extant. Its type is Pycnodonta. It is the type tribe of Pycnodonteinae, Pycnodontinae.

It was corrected as Pycnodontini by Casadio (1998), Bouchet et al. (2010) and Squires (2018).

It was assigned to Pycnodontinae by Casadio (1998); and to Pycnodonteinae by Bouchet et al. (2010), Carter et al. (2011) and Squires (2018).
