Heteroconchia was named by Cox (1960). It is extant.

It was reranked as the superorder Heteroconchia by Bouchet et al. (2010); it was reranked as the infraclass Heteroconchia by Carter et al. (2011).

It was assigned to Autolamellibranchiata by Giribet and Wheeler (2002); to Bivalvia by Ward (1992), Bieler and Mikkelsen (2006) and Scholz et al. (2008); and to Autobranchia by Bouchet et al. (2010) and Carter et al. (2011).
