Fimbriidae was named by Nicol (1950) [m. kosnik taxon no: 5181]. It is extant.

It was reranked as the subfamily Fimbriinae by Carter et al. (2011).

It was assigned to Lucinacea by Vokes (1980); to Mactromyoidea by Nevesskaja (2009); and to Lucinidae by Carter et al. (2011).
