Ilionidae was named by Fleming (1828). It is extant.

It was reranked as the subfamily Ilioniinae by Bouchet et al. (2010) and Carter et al. (2011).

It was assigned to Lucinoidea by Nevesskaja (2009); and to Lucinidae by Bouchet et al. (2010) and Carter et al. (2011).
