Turtoniidae was named by Clark (1855). It is extant.
It was synonymized subjectively with Veneridae by Bieler and Mikkelsen (2006); it was reranked as the subfamily Turtoniinae by Bouchet et al. (2010); it was reranked as the family Turtoniina by Carter et al. (2011).
It was assigned to Cyamiacea by Newell (1965) and Vokes (1980); to Veneroidea by Coan et al. (2000); to Cyamioidea by Nevesskaja (2009); to Veneridae by Bouchet et al. (2010); and to Meretricini by Carter et al. (2011).
