Vermilingua was named as a superfamily.

It was corrected as Vermilinguia by Zittel (1893); it was misspelled as Vermiingua by Ameghino (1906), Carroll (1988), Gaudin (1995) and Gaudin and Branham (1998); it was reranked as the suborder Vermilingua by Wilson and Reeder (2005).

It was assigned to Edentata by Zittel (1893); to Anicanodonta by Ameghino (1889) and Ameghino (1906); to Pilosa by Carroll (1988), Gaudin (1995) and Gaudin and Branham (1998); and to Pilosa by Wilson and Reeder (2005).
