Taxonomy
Pecten (Chlamys) ornatus vaginulus was named by Dall (1898) [TYPE SPECIMEN: Represented by lectotype. DISTRIBUTION: Late Miocene-Late Pliocene; North Carolina-Dominican Republic.]. Its type specimen is USNM 135786, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Pecten (Chlamys) vaginulus by Dall (1898); it was recombined as Pecten vaginulus by Maury (1917); it was recombined as Chlamys (Chlamys) vaginulus by Wooding (1925); it was recombined as Spathochlamys vaginula by Waller (1993) and Waller (2011).
