Pecten eccentricus was named by Gabb (1873) [TYPE SPECIMEN: Represented by lectotype.]. Its type specimen is ANSP 2854, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Pecten (Plagioctenium) eccentricus by Dall (1898); it was misspelled as Pecten excentricus by Maury (1917); it was recombined as Argopecten eccentricus by Waller (2011).
