Libytheidae was named by Boisduval (1836). It is extant. Its type is Libythea.

It was reranked as the subfamily Libytheinae by Sohn et al. (2012), Kawahara (2013) and de Jong (2017).

It was assigned to Ditrysia by Carpenter (1992); and to Nymphalidae by Sohn et al. (2012), Kawahara (2013) and de Jong (2017).
