Sphenacanthidae was named by Maisey (1982). It is not extant. Its type is Sphenacanthus.

It was assigned to Ctenacanthoidea by Ivanov (1999); to Euselachii by Ginter et al. (2010); and to Euselachii by Ivanov et al. (2013).
