Carabites ellipticus was named by Haupt (1956). Its type specimen is GPIUH G55/27, an elytra, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Geiseltal (GPIUH collection), which is in a Lutetian mire/swamp lignite/shale in Germany.
