Borhyaenidium altiplanicus

Mammalia - Sparassodonta

Taxonomy
Borhyaenidium altiplanicus was named by Villarroel and Marshall (1983) [Of known species of late Tertiary Hathlyacyninae, Borhyaenidium altiplanicus most closely resembles in size and structure B. musteloides Pascual and Bocchino, 1963 from beds of Huayquerian age in Argentina. These species differ in B. altiplanicus being slightly smaller, in P2 being longer (not shorter) than P3; in P2 lacking a distinct posterobasal heel, in having a relatively smaller posterobasal heel on P3; and in M1-2 having relatively larger talonids. In other aspects these taxa are inseparable. Both these species have slightly smaller linear tooth dimensions than Borhyaenidium riggsi Marshall, 1981 from beds of Montehermosan age in Argentina. ]. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is GEOBOL no. ACH (Achiri) 243, a mandible (Fragment of a left mandibular ramus with posterior alveolus of P1, crowns P2 - M2 complete, and anterior root and most of posterior alveolus of M3), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Achiri, which is in a Tortonian terrestrial sandstone in the Mauri Formation of Bolivia.
