Petalodus serratus was named by Owen (1840). It is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Ctenopetalus.
It was recombined as Ctenoptychius serratus by Agassiz (1848), M'Coy (1855) and Woodward (1889); it was recombined as Ctenopetalus serratus by Hay (1902).
