Taxonomy
Patene simpsoni was named by Paula Couto (1952). Its type specimen is MNRJ 1331-V, a maxilla (Incomplete right maxilla), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is São José de Itaborai, which is in an Eocene fissure fill marl in the Itaboraí Formation of Brazil.
