Taxonomy
Bethacanthus insolitus was named by Zangerl (1990). Its type specimen is FMNH PF2694, a partial skeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Bethel Church Excello Shale, Pike County, which is in a Moscovian marine shale in the Carbondale Formation of Indiana.
