Elisama kirkbyi was named by Scudder (1886). It is an impression. Its type locality is English Purbeck (unknown locality), which is in a Berriasian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal horizon in the United Kingdom.

It was recombined as Mesoblattina kirkbyi by Handlirsch (1906).
