Atagma was named by Lonsdale (1850) [Sepkoski's age data: K Coni K Maes-u Sepkoski's reference number: 586,626]. Its type is Ceriopora papularia.

It was assigned to Petaloporidae by Bassler (1953); and to Cyclostomata by Sepkoski (2002).
