Taxonomy
Sakawairhynchia diptonensis was named by MacFarlan (1992). Its type specimen is OU 16499, a shell, and it is a mold. Its type locality is JDC 627, Taringatura Hills (E45/f6654), which is in an Otamitan marine horizon in New Zealand.
