Heterodontosaurinae was named by Sereno (2012) [Based off Heterodontosauridae Kuhn 1966/Romer 1966 but not strictly an elevation of rank.]. Its type is Heterodontosaurus.

It was assigned to Heterodontosauridae by Sereno (2012); and to Pachycephalosauria by Dieudonné et al. (2020).
