Clypeina was named by Michelin (1845) [Sepkoski's age data: K Coni T Eo Sepkoski's reference number: 626]. It is not extant. Its type is Clypeina marginoporella.
It was assigned to Entalophoridae by Bassler (1953); to Dasycladaceae by Andrews (1970) and Lakhanpal et al. (1976); to Cyclostomata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Acetabulariaceae by Bassoulet et al. (1978) and Senowbari-Daryan (2003).
