Elea was named by d'Orbigny (1853) [Sepkoski's age data: K Vala T Dani Sepkoski's reference number: 626,1260]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Eleidae.

It was assigned to Cyclostomata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Eleidae by Bassler (1953), Taylor (2010) and Taylor and Zagorsek (2011).
