Chirotherium marshalli was named by Peabody (1948). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is UCMP 37348, a footprint, and it is a trace fossil.
It was recombined as Isochirotherium marshalli by Haubold (1971), Demathieu and Haubold (1972), Haubold (1974), Courel and Demathieu (1976), Klein and Lucas (2010), Klein et al. (2011) and Klein and Lucas (2021).
