Agrypnus was named by Eschscholtz (1829). It is extant. It is the type genus of Agrypnides, Agrypnini.

It was assigned to Agrypnini by Wappler (2003), Barsevskis (2005), Bouchard et al. (2011) and Kundrata et al. (2021).
