Leiosoecia was named by Canu and Bassler (1920) [Sepkoski's age data: K Apti T Eo-l Sepkoski's reference number: 597]. It is the type genus of Leiosoeciidae.

It was assigned to Leiosoeciidae by Bassler (1953); and to Cyclostomata by Sepkoski (2002).
