Oenosaurus was named by Rauhut et al. (2012) [urn:lsid:zoobank.org:act:48C1BA32-BC6D-407D-81E0-7ECFF22D77A3]. Its type is Oenosaurus muehlheimensis.

It was assigned to Sphenodontinae by Rauhut et al. (2012) and Cau et al. (2014); and to Sphenodontidae by Herrera-Flores et al. (2018).
