This genus has historically been treated as both a bryozoan (such as in Bassler, 1953 Treatise volume) and as a sponge (such as in Debrenne, et al., 2015 Treatise volume). Both refer to the same genus Neuropora Bronn 1825.

Taxonomy
Neuropora was named by Bronn (1825) [Sepkoski's age data (as bryozoan): J Bajo Sepkoski's reference number: 1260 Sepkoski's age data (as sponge): J (Hett) - K (u)].

It was assigned to Heteroporidae by Bassler (1953); to Neuroporidae by Termier et al. (1985); to Cyclostomata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Halichondrida by West et al. (2015).
