Cancellaria venusta was named by Tuomey and Holmes (1857) [DISTRIBUTION: Pliocene; Florida.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Cancellaria (Massyla) venusta by DuBar (1958), Olsson (1967), Woodring (1970) and Landau et al. (2007); it was recombined as Massyla venusta by Landau et al. (2012) and Landau et al. (2012).
