Archocyrtium was named by Deflandre (1972) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ldov C Serp Sepkoski's reference number: 701]. Its type is Archocyrtium riedeli.

It was assigned to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002); and to Archocyrtiidae by De Wever et al. (2001), Wang et al. (2003) and Feng et al. (2004).
