Cancellaria similis was named by Sowerby (1833) [DISTRIBUTION: Recent; West Africa.]. It is extant. It is the type species of Cancellaria (Bivetiella).

It was recombined as Cancellaria (Bivetiella) similis by Wenz (1943) and Petit (1976); it was recombined as Bivetiella similis by Landau et al. (2012).
