Semicea was named by d'Orbigny (1854) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno K Maes Sepkoski's reference number: 588,942,1260]. It is the type genus of Semiceidae.

It was assigned to Semiceidae by Bassler (1953); and to Cyclostomata by Sepkoski (2002).
