Taxonomy
Ammonites metternichi was named by Hauer (1846). It is the type species of Pinacoceras.

It was recombined as Pinacoceras metternichi by von Mojsisovics (1873), von Mojsisovics (1902), Spath (1951), Bychkov (1985) and Shevyrev (1990).
