Nautilus trochleaeformis was named by Lindstroem (1865).

It was recombined as Ptychites trocheaeformis by Bando (1964); it was recombined as Aristoptychites trochleaeformis by Weitschat and Lehmann (1983); it was recombined as Ptychites trochleaeformis by Tozer (1994).
