Triton vespaceum was named by Lamarck (1822). It is extant.

It was recombined as Turritriton vespaceus by Habe and Kosuge (1966); it was recombined as Cymatium (Turritriton) vespaceum by Beu (1985); it was recombined as Cymatium (Monoplex) vespaceum by Wilson (1993); it was recombined as Cymatium vespaceum by Kubo (1995); it was recombined as Monoplex vespaceus by Beu (2010).
