Constellaria was named by Dana (1846). Its type is Constellaria florida. It is the type genus of Constellariidae.
It was assigned to Cystoporata by Sepkoski (2002); to Fistuliporina by Bolton and Cuffey (2005); and to Constellariidae by Bassler (1911), Bassler (1953), Utgaard (1981) and Zhang et al. (2018).
