Taxonomy
Lyrocephalus was named by Wiman (1914). It is not extant. Its type is Lyrocephalus euri.

It was assigned to Lyrocephalinae by Säve-Söderbergh (1935); and to Trematosauridae by Watson (1919) and Warren and Black (1985).
