Watsonisuchus was named by Ochev (1966). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Kestrosaurus by Shishkin et al. (2004).

It was assigned to Mastodonsauridae by Damiani (2001), Steyer (2003) and Damiani and Rubidge (2003); and to Capitosauria by Schoch (2013).
