Cassis coarctata was named by Sowerby (1825). It is extant. Its type specimen is BMNH 1967673, a shell.

It was recombined as Cassis (Levenia) coarctata by Schenck (1926); it was recombined as Cypraecassis coarctata by Beu (2010).
