Compsocerops was named by Sengupta (1995). Its type is Compsocerops cosgriffi. It was considered monophyletic by Sengupta (1995).

It was assigned to Chigutisauridae by Sengupta (1995), Schoch and Milner (2000) and Warren and Marsicano (2000).
