Ammonites chauvinianus was named by d'Orbigny (1847). Its type specimen is MNHN.F.R02971 and is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Pseudopeltoceras chauvinianum by d'Orbigny (1847) and Parent (2006); it was recombined as Pseudopeltoceras chauvini by Jeannet (1951); it was recombined as Binatisphinctes chauvinianus by Enay and Howarth (2019).
